Health Benefits of the Durian

Probably one of the most unusual exotic fruits available on the market today is the durian. A seasonal fruit that is cultivated in many exotic countries, durian fruit is extremely high in antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. True – almost all exotic fruit have a high amount of these nutrients, but durian fruit takes these to another level. If it were possible to name a fruit the ‘most nutritious’, then the durian could really be considered one of them!

Though some may not like the durian’s smell, its health benefits totally balance it out.

Unfortunately, since the durian is still not very common in the Western world and is usually sourced from exotic locations in Southeast Asia, it is more expensive than more common fruits such as apples, pineapple, grapes and pears.  Additionally, it may be pretty hard to find fresh durian fruit.  Finally, you may have heard of the durian’s unique smell, which is disliked by some.  However, in terms of your health, the health benefits that the durian provide definitely outweigh the disadvantages. Let’s take a look at some of the most common benefits of the durian fruit:

Durian has a high amount of carbohydrates, protein, and calories. I know this may not sound like a good thing, with the calorie content being high, but compared to other fruits which give you hardly any calorific value, these are wonderful. If you are into fitness, or bodybuilding, then the durian fruit is a great all-around snack and provides you with plenty of energy in the form of natural protein and carbohydrates. You probably know the benefits of carbohydrates and protein, but for the record’s sake, protein is essential for growth and repair of your muscles, and carbohydrates are needed for a source of energy!  What makes the durian even better is that it is a natural source of protein, and in this way it’s a great change from those processed and artificial energy bars.  Because of these benefits, durian is extremely popular in the bodybuilding community as a natural source of protein and carbs.

Another one of the durian’s health benefits is the fact that it contains no cholesterol whatsoever. That is great for people who currently suffer from high cholesterol levels, and have to watch what they eat. Eat as much durian fruit as you want, and your cholesterol levels won’t budge whatsoever!

Being healthy and well is not just about being physically fit, but it is also having a sense of overall well-being, and the durian fruit can help you achieve that. Thanks to its ability to increase serotonin levels, durian fruit can help promote an overall healthier body, and can help alleviate states of depression. Another benefit is that it slows down the process of aging and the development of wrinkles. Now that definitely adds to the well-being factor! Who wants to get old?

In my opinion, the health benefits of the durian are one of a kind, especially in a fruit. If you can find durian fruit locally, then do so without a second thought! And although it’s not the tastiest fruit in the world, it definitely deserves the top spot for being one of the most nutritious and healthy, so check it out!
